Homing

Loading puzzle…

Name any country. Each guess shows how far it is from the hidden one, and the warmer its color, the closer.

A new hidden country every day

Everyone hunts for the same country each day, and a new one hides at midnight your time. Monday and Tuesday it's a well-known country and every guess shows the distance and an arrow pointing the way. Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday you get distances only, and on Friday and Saturday only rough bands of distance, for less familiar countries.

There's no limit on guesses: the fewer you need, the better you rank. If you're stuck, you can give up and see the answer, but the day's game, and your streak, are over.

Find it on consecutive days to build a streak, then share your result. A shared result shows how many guesses you took, never the country.

How to play Homing

  1. A country is hidden somewhere in the world. Name any country to start.
  2. Each guess appears on the globe in a color that says how close it is: blue far away, then yellow, orange and red as you get warmer.
  3. Distances run from border to border, so a country right next to the hidden one is 0 km away: it's bordering.
  4. Keep naming countries until you find it. There's no limit, but the fewer guesses, the better. Stuck? Give up, and the globe shows the answer.

Territories such as Greenland and Hong Kong count as countries here.

What each level shows

  • Easy: the distance in kilometres, and an arrow pointing toward the hidden country.
  • Medium: the distance, without the arrow.
  • Hard: a band of distance, such as 1,000 to 2,000 km.
  • Expert: only the color, on a globe without borders.

Tips

  • Start big. A first guess in the middle of a continent tells you more than one on its edge.
  • Use two distances. Two guesses' distances meet in only a couple of places. A third settles it.
  • Drag and zoom the globe. Small countries and islands are easy to miss, and every one counts.
